Daniel, Mia and Anthony were a happy family doing their best. After Daniel’s sudden passing, Anthony and Mia are both not doing well. Anthony stops communicating and lacks the emotional availability and support system to properly deal with his grief. Mia is in a similar situation, so she starts to see a new man named Carl. The relationship quickly reveals itself to be more about the pharmaceuticals Carl is supplying to her, rather than love or comfort. 

Carl starts to leverage Mia’s newfound addiction as a way of controlling her and making her do things she doesn’t want to do.  This means Anthony is left trying to protect his mother, avoid Carl, work a part-time job and get through his last year of school, all without any support. One night, after a long day of school and work Anthony hears Carl yelling at Mia after she claims to be uncomfortable with what he’s asking her to do. Anthony soon finds out that Carl is having Mia hold onto a gun for him. Carl is turning out to be much more dangerous than Anthony knew. 

Anthony tries to tell Mia she needs to leave Carl but lacks the emotional intelligence to tell her in a way that’s helpful. When he fails, he starts to believe that his only choice to save his mom is to sink to Carl’s level and deal with the problem violently. The next time Anthony sees Carl, he confronts him, and Carl doesn’t like it. Mia tosses herself between them in an attempt to stop Carl from hurting Anthony. Carl then tosses her aside, leaving her on the ground, crying.  


Anthony sees this as the last straw, gets Carl’s gun, and shoots Carl in front of Mia. Mia is horrified -  horrified that Anthony has the capacity for murder, and would do that to Carl. Anthony sees her disgust and runs out the front door. He breaks into a motel room as the sirens rage on behind him. He then starts to shave his hair off with the disposable razor in the bathroom. We leave Anthony in that motel room as a wanted man, with no hair, no escape, and a hot gun.
